He's been taking women and men of color off the promotion list.

Fuck that guy.

He's kicked out trans people.

Fuck that guy.

He's been limiting the number of faiths the US military chaplain service will support.

Fuck that guy.

On the other hand, I am all for the US military shrinking down to the size where, like Grover Norquist's ambition for the government, I can drown it in the bathtub, so -- the enemy of my enemy is my ally? Mmmmmaybe?

Okay, so, you go, Pete Hegseth. Alienate everyone! Only straight cis Christian men should die for our country! Throw everyone else out! And then we can -- just maybe -- reduce the budget by an order of magnitude or five.

It Makes a Fellow Proud to be a Soldier is today's Tom Lehrer earworm.

Brave Sipuli in the great outdoors

cimorene: painting of two women in Regency gowns drinking tea (tea)
[personal profile] cimorene
Sipuli has been getting gradually more comfortable in the yard and she now spends most of her time there exploring. She wants to check everything out, walk out in the street, climb through the barbed wire in the hedge into the woods, sneak into the neighbors' yard, and crawl under the tenants' table while they're sitting at it.

But she still runs away from the tenants' kids, who are in the yard at the same time as her multiple times a week, if they talk to her. Last week a lady walking by in the street asked if she was having a nice time outside and she whipped her head around and cringed down in the grass and tried to slither away. She also panicked and ran and got tangled in a chair when one of the tenants said Pspsps to her a few weeks ago. In her jumpy moments she has wiggled out of her harness twice now. I guess we need to get her a more secure harness.

But! Limericks! The third one is especially great.

Books
Since last I posted one of these, of course I read Ann Leckie's Radiant Star. I loved it. Leckie's doing something different with narrative voice this time around, so mark that off your bingo card, and if you enjoy Victorian novels then this narrator might be particularly enjoyable for you. It goes very hard.

Having read that (and then a friend's annotations, which I then sent on with the ARC to the next person in the chain) I decided I wanted to take some space to recover with T Kingfisher's fourth paladin book, Paladin's Faith. Which, as it turns out, is going much harder than I expected it too.

I am also making my way slowly through Nick Walker's Neuroqueer Heresies, and finding it unsatisfying. I'd be less critical of it as polemic (although still annoyed at the prescriptivism and the exhorting readers to police other people's language too if they don't use "neurodivergent" and "neurodiversity" according to Dr Walker's preferred definitions), but when she's stating outright in the book that she intends to use it as a textbook to teach in university, I want more rigour and citations.

Fandom
Enjoying a resurgence of Radch discussion on Discord.

More ephemeral fic in the Nine Worlds fandom. May was good for that.

Crafts
Finished the table.

Tech
Wayland and gnashing of teeth.
That said, I learned how to use xargs in Bash, which made Android backups easier for me.

Garden
Harvested what is, amazingly, not the last of the tomatoes. Semi-dried all the ripe tomatoes I had in the oven, and froze the results. Did a little weeding, and sowed pak choy and calendula seeds.

I also feel like, "Here is a page with a zillion soundscapes. Which do you choose first?" is a personality test.

Miners Support the Lesbians and Gays

Okay, not just the miners; the trade unions as a whole showed the fuck up (and have already been showing up for trans rights in the UK in a big way). But it was, also, very much the miners:

The Guardian: ‘Bigger and better than ever’: how Durham Pride beat Reform’s funding axe with help from the miners

[The LGBTQ+] community “showed their heroism” during the miners’ strikes, he said. “They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

He added: “That relationship’s prevailed ever since, [and so] the Durham Miners’ Association have decided to make this a priority in County Durham.”

A friend linked me to the Substack of Rev. Brooks Cato, in full knowledge that I am an atheist who finds Christianity as a theoretical monolith deeply questionable. This reverend differentiates between his faith and Christo-fascism explicitly and directly, and has a deep well of compassion. He is doing the work I admire the figure of Jesus Christ for doing.

For an example of his writing for anyone who has ever had gender feelings, or loved someone who has gender feelings, his piece: The Myth of Biblical Masculinity. He tells it like he sees it, and he sees clearly.

I have approx. 1K of Rocky POV Grace/Rocky, with more to come. I have no idea whether it works.

Drop me a line if you’re up for beta-reading in the least persnickety, most encouraging way possible. :D

Presently, it is my bedtime, but I will follow up with anyone who's interested when I get out of bed.

This Doctor Who vid by Greensilver to Take On Me is 15 years old and, therefore, quite a few Doctors shy of the present, but it is giving me Nine/Rose/Jack feelings all over again.

I dug it up because [personal profile] buggery linked me to an animatic Take On Me Doctor Who vid which is very well-done but not my cup of tea, artistically speaking -- the jittery style makes my brain itchy.

You may like them both!

(ETA: The first vid made me ship Nine/Rose/Jack all over again, and I only wrote them once, in Sohcahtoa. I think I did a bang-up job making the Doctor's POV deeply weird.)

Wax's favorite aunt is here! She came for the triplets' graduation party Saturday. We love to have her.

However, I'm out of paracetamol (acetaminophen) because last time I was in a pharmacy I accidentally bought the small box of 10x 500mg instead of the normal one of 30. And I am completely exhausted after cleaning strenuously the last three days: vacuuming, tons of laundry, sweeping, scrubbing floors, dusting, shaking rugs and moving bunny furniture, and scrubbing two bathrooms yesterday (mirrors and glass, chrome and porcelain, and toilets). My hands, feet, shoulders, back, legs, and arms are all separately sore. It's also extremely windy and the wind is very cold. I do not want to walk to the store! However, I'm about to run out of Earl Grey as well as painkillers (we have plenty of ibuprofen, but I don't take it often because I don't want it to destroy my sensitive stomach).

I also had cause to search the web for tips for removing limescale from toilets and floors and glass shower walls and chrome fixtures. The glass got much better, and with magic eraser some of the scale came off the floor tiles where there's a drip that has made little white rings around their edges (they're cobalt blue Japanese glazed porcelain tile), but all my cleaning products and physical friction made no impression on the other named surfaces. I found insane stuff like people with hard water chipping the calcium out of the toilet bowl with a screwdriver or filling it up with hydrochloric acid. The post I found about limescale on glass was from a woman who has been trying to remove it for ten years and the only things that have worked for her were razors and steel wool. The internet wants me to fill a plastic bag with vinegar and rubber band it around the faucet, but it's a shower mixer that looks like this... do I even have a big enough bag?

I have mostly a pleasant feeling of accomplishment. But also... sore.

Now if I could just stop being so nauseated that only pretzels and ramen sound like food, I could conquer the world.
